What is a good downloadable family tree software I could use like RootsMagic?

Personally, we've chosen to start using RootsMagic on the recommendation of a very accomplished stake T&FH leader in our stake (formerly an Area Temple and Family History Consultant for many years). Additionally however, RootsMagic is available free for use in Family History Centers (once we can re-open them), and I presume you could use it there by saving your data to a USB Thumb Drive. However, we did not find the cost of RootsMagic prohibitive at all, and it would be easily usable at home if you purchased it. If I remember correctly, they have a free trial period as well.
Others quite likely have other programs they favor, with good reasons. I was just looking for easy transferability of data to a home program as a backup. I'm not worried about the Church losing our data. But in case some person does some significant changing of my established family lines in FamilySearch, I want to be able to see exactly what it looked like before the changes (been there, done that very recently - and unfortunately did not yet have a personal backup copy on RootsMagic). It's kind of like trying to reconstruct your hard drive in the event the computer dies and takes out the drive with it. Been there, done that, too. LOL!

There are three main ones and you can download a free version and try them out. RootsMagic, Ancestral Quest, and Legacy. They all work with FamilySearch. The paid versions have more bells and whistles. Google each one and check them out.

Take a look at the "Solutions Gallery" in "FamilySearch"
https://partners.familysearch.org/solutionsgallery/s/
.
There are a number of different "Third Party" alternatives that you can use in conjunction with "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch".
.
I do not use such ...
.
But ...
That said ...
.
There have been many "Third Party" alternatives that have been discussed in the "FamilySearch" ("Get Satisfaction") 'Feedback' Forum.
.
One "Third Party" alternative, that is a 'standalone' programme, that you can use on your computer at home, that seems to get a good 'bad rap' is "Ancestral Quest". If you are used to the "Old" PAF (ie. Personal Ancestral File), of the Church, you may find "Ancestral Quest" a good ("Updated") alternative. "Ancestral Quest" is a "Third Party" alternative that is "Certified" to work with "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch". There is a "Basic" version that is FREE; and, that FREE version is generally acceptable for most Users/Patrons.
.
Whereas, many Users/Patrons use, BOTH, "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch"; and, "Ancestry_com", in tandem/conjunction with each other. They keep a 'Tree', on "Ancestry_com", in their Account with "Ancestry_com"; so that, NO "Changes" can be affected by any other User/Patron.
.
The choice is tremendous ... the choice is yours ...
.
I hope this helps.

I personally like RootsMagic. I have found it to be everything I have wanted and more. It is about to undergo a major update. If you buy it today, you will (for free) receive the updated version when it is released.

Few people would marry someone without first spending some time together, or buy a car before taking a test drive to at least make sure the seats fit and are comfortable. You should do the same with family tree software. Ancestral Quest, RootsMagic, and Legacy all have free versions for you to test drive to see which fits you best.
