Hungarian Village Name
In this marriage record of Gyorgy Torok and Barbola Ivan of 17 Feb 1794 in the image index created by Family Search the village is shown as Abaujvar, Abuj-Torna, Magyarorszag. Most of my Hungarian ancestors came from the county of Abuj-Torna but I am not familiar with the village Abaujvar. Is this village now part of Slovakia? Has the name of the village been changed if so what is the Slovakian name?
Thank You

Hi Lou,
first step would be just to google a placename, as it often helps.
Abaújvár is still part of Hungary: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aba%C3%BAjv%C3%A1r
Cheers,
Zoltán

For stuff about places, I recommend gazetteers. In particular, for figuring out the current name and country, the RadixHub version of the 1913 edition is very handy, although they lost the domain name several years ago, so you have to use the Wayback Machine: https://web.archive.org/web/20160327224230/http://www.radixhub.com/radixhub/gazetteers/1913/.
The one drawback to that presentation is that you have to know the county; for finding that, I generally use the Central Statistics Office's scans of the official gazetteers: https://www.kshkonyvtar.hu/article/56/959/helysegnevtarak. (The 1913 is available there as a 1770-page PDF; I recommend downloading and saving it to your local machine.)
