Place name in Zürich area
Joseph Krauß married Maria Catharina Seybel on 14 Nov 1702 in Dürkheim, Palatinate, Bavaria. Joseph's father was from what looks like Herzenhausen, Switzerland, in the Zürich area. I'm not having much luck locating Herzenhausen. Does anyone have any suggestions of what else the place name might be?

To be honest - I haven't a clue 🤔.
I have posted your question to https://www.geneal-forum.com/phpbb/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=32805 ... let's see if someone comes up with an idea.

There was a first response, more or less confirming my thoughts.
1) I cannot find a location of this name in Switzerland - not even close.
2) Kraus / Krause / Krauss is not an old Swiss name - quite common in Germany though,
3) The marriage took place in a catholic church - and given names Joseph and Michael are more usual in catholic regions anyway.
4) If from the Zürich region (that is, ruled by Zürich - which was more that the canton today) this person would in 1702 have been reformed for sure. All families not wanting to convert to the reformed church will most likely have left the region long ago.
5) There are several Herzhausen in Hessen (Germany): https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herzhausen.
Problem: why would he be mentioned as from "Zürcher Gebiedts" ???
Have you got any further information about the circumstances which might help to solve the mystery?

@WSeelentag Thank you for passing on the reply.
The entry actually came from a Lutheran church record.
It was not uncommon to indicate if a person came from a different parish, so if the groom was initially from Switzerland, I don't understand why there is a problem if details about his place of origin is included in his marriage entry.
I don't have any additional information about the circumstances. I was tracing the family back. I didn't find any entries for the Kraus surname in the earlier records for this parish.

"The entry actually came from a Lutheran church record."
Sorry - my mistake - but given names Joseph and Michael are still more usual in catholic regions.
"I don't understand why there is a problem if details about his place of origin is included in his marriage entry."
No problem at all - on the contrary ;-). The "problem" occurs when Herzhausen should be in Germany - why then mention Zürich?
BTW - https://www.archives-quickaccess.ch/search/stazh/edb/results?any_lastname=&male_lastname=kraus&male_firstname=&male_origin=&female_lastname=&female_firstname=&female_origin=&parish=&reference=&page_in_volume=&date=&fulltext=&jahr_von=1524&jahr_bis=1800 finds a few Kraus marriages (even a Michael from Urach) in (todays) canton Zürich prior to 1800: where an origin is mentioned, these men came from Germany. The Michael (married 1639) would be rather early for a son getting married in 1702 ... check the baptisms in Birmensdorf for a suitable son Josef?

Second thought - just a wild guess: could father and son have more recently been living in a Herzhausen in Germany - but came originally from Switzerland / Zürich?

@WSeelentag Thanks for the link. I hadn't thought about Herzenhausen being in Germany. I took the info about Switzerland and Zürich as additional descriptors/identifiers for the place, but I can see where another interpretation is possible. Thanks again.
