Far from being passive recipients of freedom, African Americans were active agents in freeing themselves and in assisting Union forces to ensure a victory in the Civil War. Some served as harbor and river pilots, some acted as spies and operatives on behalf of the Union Army, and between 160,000 and 200,000 men served as soldiers during the war. Many gave their lives for this cause.
