German Translation Request
I have just found that the Melchior Schmitt I thought was my great grandfather is the wrong Melchior Schmitt: 27 November 1741 – Deceased L5B6-9PX.
So I requested the record of his son's marriage but I cannot read it.
The document attached is the marriage record of Great grandfather Franz Sebastian Schmitt to Barbara Linck. The entry is on the top of the right hand page and is handwritten in German.
Please help me translate this document.
Also, is there a reason it is written in German and not Latin?
Thank you in advance for your efforts
Margie

Re: German. It's probably due to a decree to use German instead of Latin henceforth. Latin used to be the lingua franca but things changed a lot during the 19th century.

I believe the groom's mother is from Ripperg (now written Rippberg https://www.meyersgaz.org/place/20603020).
The name of the bride's deceased father is Franz Linck.

My great grandfather, Franz Peter Schmitt, grandson of Melchior was a weaver according to document at City archive in Buchen.

Hi,
here a translation:
No. 1: In the year one thousand eight-hundred five and twenty the 27th January at 8 am was, after bans on the 16th and 23rd January and no objections, and in the presence of witnesses, married Franz Sebastian Schmitt, single, citizen and master mason at Hainstadt, legitimate son of Melchior Schmitt, citizen and weaver at this place and Eva, née Hermann from ????, with Barbara Linkin, single, legitimate daughter of the deceased Franz Link, citizen and farmer at this place and his wife Eva, née Weissin from here. Witnesses were Franz Weis, [wealthy] farmer from here and Peter Schark ??, citizen and farmer from Waldhausen.
And here a question:
Why is the Melchior Schmitt born 1841 the wrong person?
There is a death certificate of a Melchior Schmitt who died at Hainstadt "in his 83rd year of life" in 1825. But in this certificate they don't mention a wife and his occupation was day laborer.
Possibly the Heimatverein Hainstadt might be able to help there?
Regards, Christine

I can't believe I found such a powerfully helpful resource.
Christine, thank you for bringing up the central question again:
"Why is the Melchior Schmitt born 1841 the wrong person?"
And who is the right Melchior Schmitt?

Hopefully you can get the marriage record for Melchior and Eva and it will have information about his parents. There were apparrently at least 2 Melchior Schmitts born about 1741 in the area. One died in 1743, one in 1825 but it's not clear yet who the parents were for each. And if the 1825 Melchior was a day laborer but Sebastion's father was a mason then there are 3 Melchior Schmitts all born about the same time.

The professions of Melchior Schmitt, husband of Eva, are very confusing. There is a death certificate for Eva Schmitt, 58 years old, wife of Melchior Schmitt, at Hainstadt in 1816. There the husband's profession seems to be "Schweinhirt", I think the proper English word is "swineherd". So he might just have had different professions throughout his life. Hope the link works. It's entry no. 18.
