Finding an occupation for a Norwegian who was born 1864, immigrated in 1879
Hello, and thank you to anyone who can help!
My gg-grandfather, Tellef Ellefsen Flak, (LLSK-62B), was born on 22 September 1864 in Tveit, Birkenes, Aust-Agder, Norway.
He immigrated to the United States in 1887.
I am trying to find where he might have worked between confirmation in 1879 and his immigration in 1887.
Or what his occupation was.
I assume he was a day laborer. His father was a saw-master and cotter on the Flak Farm in Tveit. There was also an estate nearby, Boengaard, owned by a Hegermann, and he may have worked for Hegermann as a laborer, or possibly for Hegermann's sawmill. There is an outside chance he was a sailor.
Are there any record sets that can be searched for an occupation?
Thank you,
Clytee Gold

Not that I know of for him. The only places I have found the occupation for people are in census records, marriage records, birth records, and later immigration records. In the 1865 census he was only 1 year old, in 1875 he was only 11, and by the 1891 he had immigrated. There are not good records for immigrations as early as 1887 if there is one at all. Was he married before he immigrated? If so, that marriage record is likely the only place to record his occupation. If he was single, I don't think you will be able to find any occupation for him.

Thank you Gordon. He married in Chicago, so he has no marriage record in Norway.
