I'm trying to understand how to use "Search Parish Registry Norway" to find death records.

Folks:

 

Shari Duce, Chalotte and many others have been extremely helpful in me expanding a family line. I'm now trying to learn and move forward with my own search capabilities. Thus I'm asking HOW to use a tool to find info for myself.

I'm trying to find death dates for as many of this family as possible (as well as get their last names to be accurate

Lets suppose I want to find a death record for Johan Fredrek Johansson. Son of Adam. He was born in Eidsvoll, Akershus, Norway.

 

So the below is what I did my search on and got 0 results.

 

 

So Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I wanted to start to find some sources to Johan Fredrek and see if I can track him to his death, eventually. Perhaps I'm going about this wrong.

1900 Death record for Mina Fredriksdatter b. 1864.https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/2921/245 To find this I only put in the county and parish, then I look for the year(s) that fit and choose "Innhold", next I see the deaths and I chose 1900 and started looking, it was the first entry.

Trevor, I see that you put the person's name in the "text search" box. Never do this. If you look at the help info by hovering over the question mark, you will see:

 

 

It is not for people's names. I have never found any reason to use this field.

 

Also, keep in mind that in this database, you are not looking for people, you are looking for parish record books. You find the book that might having information about your people then start looking for the people page by page.

 

Some of the registers have been transcribed and these transcriptions are searchable. But you have to use the search form for the transcriptions.

 

There are generalized search forms, such as this one for every death that has been transcribed:

You access these through the home page here:

 

 

 

However, it is usually easer to search just one parish register at a time. For one thing, you will know if that register has been transcribed or not. You access this search function for a parish register from any page of that parish register by opening the side panel and looking for the link:

 

This particular record has had marriages and deaths transcribed, but not births.

Also be sure to spend some time getting to know the transcription databases. Spelling can vary widely. Which data fields are used can vary widely.

 

I always use wide cards. It can really give you the best results to just use the first two letters of names followed by an asterisk. For example, when searching for Johan, just use jo*

 

This is because you might find him in the record as Johan or Johans or Johanns or even Johen or John.

MyHeritage tree says Mina Johansen b. 19 Dec. 1899 in Norway died 14 March 1983 in Skillingmark.

Thank you once again. I'm learning how to navigate MyHeritage.

 

So Mina Johansson is an interesting case. Born in Norway of a father (Adam) who is Swedish. However, she died back in Sweden, place of her father, almost 80+ years later. How would it be best for me to trace a bit of her history? Clearly I am seeking more info (i.e. did she marry, have children, etc). Would I be best to search Eidsvoll archives to find her in records that may show a marriage or perhaps a move away and to Sweden?
