I have a quick question. My great grandmother was born in Kosice, Kosice and immigrated to the US about 1883. I’ve been looking for years for the record of her immigration.

I found a record that is probably not hers but I wanted to check with you guys. The name written was Maria Baskowitz as opposed to her birth name of Baszgoldrich. The residence states Saros which unless I’m mistaken did not include Kosice.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance

The city of Kassa was in Abauj-Torna county, but it was less than four miles south of Sáros county. In fact, Dvorzsák says that Lutheran residents of three communities (Kisfalu, Ó-Ruszin, and Tapolcsán) and Greek Catholic residents of two communities (Szent-István and Szokoly) in Sáros were recorded in Kassa.

That said, it's somewhat unusual for travel documents to name just a county. Are you sure that "Sáros" is all it says? I'd be tempted to interpret that as Sáros, Nagy-Küküllő county, which was a predominantly German village (pop. ~1100) in Transylvania.

The Hamburg Passenger lists have a column which google translates as “previous residence”. Saros was written in this column. The next column google translates as “in state or province.” In this column was stated Ungarn

The corresponding US passenger lists states only Hungary.
