Why is there a "Lanark Highlands" township in Canada West?
I've been trying to sort out historical townships in Lanark, Ontario, Canada. While working on a profile of a distant cousin I found their marriage record gave a place of "Tatlock, Lanark Highlands, Lanark, Canada West, British Colonial America".
There was no Lanark Highlands township back then - it was formed in 1997 by amalgamating several previous townships and villages. Why is it shown up in Canada West and, for that matter, Upper Canada as it was known until 1841?
What should be there are the historical townships that were amalgamated into Lanark Highlands, ie. Darling, Lavant, Dalhousie and North Sherbrooke. A couple are there - most are missing. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lanark_Highlands .

This particular town "Tatlock" is in Darling Township pre-confederation, and in fact up until the 1997 amalgamation as shown on historical maps like this one https://sites.rootsweb.com/~onlanark/darling.htm

FYI from our Authorities Team for Places:
We are in the process of transitioning all villages in Ontario to be directly under the county instead of under a township. The township is being added as a related place, and our engineers are working on making those related places searchable. When this process is complete, it will allow us to search for places in Ontario either using the township as a parent or not including it. Thank you for your patience as we are transitioning. We hope this will add clarity and simplicity to the localities in this region.
