Hello Colin,I am experienced researcher and I would firST of all get a record of his marriage,to see if his fathers name is mentioned together with his occupation. From this I would look for his fathers marriage to get his mothers name and place of marriage. Have you had a look at earlier census records for JOHN to see where he was living and who he was living with and his wife MATILDA to see if there is an earlier record of him and his family. Until you gwt his fathers name and his mother its going to be very difficult to find his birth. A check of ships to and from UK might show something but there are few records covering that date. I would have a look at www.movinghere.org.uk which has a searchable archive of thousands of items.. Good luck If I think of something else please contac me.

Collin,
Since Matilda Batten was a granddaughter to your John and Matilda Hurle and the 1881 census says she was born in South Australia, I found online that in South Australia--Matilda Batten's birth, was indeed confirmed. FYI: S. Australia recently released (as of 10 days ago) their online search access to it's BMDs! Here is the link to the online search engine:

John Hurle's Birth:
Now, knowing that she indeed was born in Australia, tends to hint or suggest that your John may have been born on-ship to Australia.
So with the above details for Matilda established, to find John Hurle's possible birth entry on "the Atlantic Ocean", you will want to search any and all ship passenger lists coming into Australia--including New South Wales, Victoria, as well as South Australia, if available. On rare occasions, births may have been recorded or mentioned by the ship's captain/commander in the ship manifests. At very least, you might discover possible name[s] for John's parents from the passenger lists. "Hurle" is a not a common surname, so passengers by the surname should be 'prime suspects', or fairly easy to determine and based on the right date-range. Then/Also try searching for online deaths for both of John's parents--once you've to learned possible given names. Order the death certificates--if available for possible further clues as to place of origin for them (John's parents). Seek certificates of death, tombstones, church records etc which can sometimes give you clarifying details and clues.
The fact the John Hurle is back in England in 1881 and residing in the Greater London region, makes me wonder if that area might just be the place of nativity of his parents...
Matilda Hurle Batten:
You'll be pleased to find Matilda Hurle Batten, daughter of Alfred John Hurle, (probable son of your John Hurle b. 1807) birth registration in the year 1855 there in S. Australia. There will undoubtedly be additional children found. Look also for the marriage of Alfred John Hurle and Matilda which should reveal for you the maiden name of Matilda.
Also search for any possible younger siblings of John Hurle, b. 1807, in order to try to discover the name[s] of John's parents. This would need to be done by searching in any available online church records outside of South Australia, as the earliest S. Australia's church registers commence far too late (1836). So consider that John may have entered Australia via a different state, i.e. New South Wales or Victoria. Try our wiki.familysearch.org for Australia "Church records" for any available online links to these:

Ship passenger lists exist coming into Australia. Start with searching FamilySearch because I believe that we have indexed many of these records. Also try the National Archives of Australia in case they have online databases you can search. Also, check our "Australia" wiki at www.wiki.familysearch.org and Emigration Records (online) to see if there are links you can click on, in order to search additional online databases.
In checking the 1871 census you'll find that your [Alfred] John Hurle was born at "Sea, Bay of Biscay", just off of the coast of France. So it appears your John Hurle was born on the way to Australia--which was quite the voyage. The ship passenger lists--if they exist for that early, just might reveal not only the names of John's parents but any older siblings as well.
A quick search in www.freebmd.org.uk will reveal the marriage between a "Batten" and your Matilda Hurle, probably occurring around the years 1871-3.
Finally, I checked the GRO.gov.uk (registration is free) and confirmed the birth registration for Matilda Batten's children. You can also do this, which will show her maiden name, thus identifying each child as her's and her late husband's.
Success to you in your quest to find John's birth and parentage.

If he was in the 1881 census why look at US passenger lists he could have been born on a ship from the Caribbean given the date. British ships would have been bringing goods from across the world to the British Isles. I also wonder what was the occupation of his father, the person who suggested census and marriage is correct, this would be the best place to start.
