If your ancester was a Civil Servant working for the U.S. Government between 1850 and 1951 (inclusive), there is a good chance that his or her personnel file is in the custody of the National Archives. NARA holds Official Personnel Folders for Civilian Government Employees from this time period at the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis. Requests for these files can be made by writing to National Archives and must include some basic information for an archivist to locate the file. For more information, click the link below.
