Can anyone at the FHL confirm whether a book is available on the shelves? - Resolved
Hello,
I just published this question in the FamilySearch Magyarország - Hungary Community and realized that this may be the more appropriate community.
I'm planning a trip to the FHL for the primary purpose of reviewing the 3-volume set of books titled "Deutsche Kolonisten im Komitat Baranya/Ungarn 1688-1752" by Hengl, Ferdinand, published by Arbeitskreis donauschwäbischer Familienforscher.
The FHL catalog record shows that the books were digitized, but that link says that they cannot be viewed online due to copyright issues. The catalog record for the physical books has the following note, "Checked Out (library use only).
From my past experience at the FHL in 2020, according to a librarian, some physical books have been removed from the shelves to be digitized and were never returned. I would like to find out whether this 3-volume set is in that state or whether the physical books can still be viewed in the library, perhaps by ordering them in advance.
I've been unsuccessful in reaching a librarian via phone and am unsure where to turn next. If the books are not available, then I will need to cancel my trip.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can find out the status of the books?
Thank you!
Nancy Tengler

I can't answer your question, but you might check the worldcat website to see if this resource is available at a library closer to home. Alternatively, you might be able to obtain it through an interlibrary loan at your local public library. https://www.worldcat.org/title/Deutsche-Kolonisten-im-Komitat-Baranya-(Ungarn)-1688-1752/oclc/18598989

Thanks Christopher. The next closest location is Arizona State Univ library, so that is my 'back-up plan'.

I checked at our local Family History center and we could see that the Family History Library has a copy but it is not accessible at the local library, only at the library in Salt Lake City.

Hi Richard,
Thank you for checking your local center. Since I posted, I was able to set up a consultation with a researcher at FHL in SLC and she was able to confirm that they have the book set on the shelf there, so my trip is on! I tried to update my post title to say 'Resolved' but couldn't figure out how to do so.
Thanks again!
Nancy

Hi Nancy,
I'm also interested in that book. What type of information is in there? Was it worth the trip?
