Looking at records held by the National Archiives and Records Administration (NARA) does not always require travelling to Washington DC. NARA operates 15 Research Facilities around the country. There may not be one in your back yard, but there is probably one sa lot closer than Washington. The link below is to a listing of those research centers. Make sure you touch base with the Research Center you are planning to visit to see what kind of records they can make available.
