Looking for a surname in the Athlone, Westmeath area.
I have an ancestor who left Ireland and went to Massachusetts Bay Colony sometime prior to 1760. In one document it states he was from Athlone, Westmeath area. He lists his last name as 'Clannen/Clanin", but I'm guessing this is an inaccurate last name. Does anyone have any ideas what it could have been? Some surname blogs suggest "McLennan", "McClannan", "Lennon", Glennon", or "McClennon". I'm stumped as to where to go from here. He was a cooper by trade. He was a Patriot for the American cause and ended up dying aboard the infamous HMS Jersey prison ship. He left behind four children, including my 4th great grandfather, Samuel Harris Clanin. I want to find his Irish story.
