I need someone to help translate my great grandfather's birth record from Hjerpsted Denmark. Hans Nicolaysen Kempt was born on April 9, 1856. Family lore says he was illegitimate. The son of Johann Gottfried Kempt, supposedly a soldier from Germany.

I do think your information is accurate. I'm not able to translate word for word but the relationships and names you have given are correct. Here is Hans in the 1860 census with his mother who is now married to Carl. Clipboard01

Hans Nicolaysen Kempt the illegitimate son of Carolina Hansen in Jerpsted. The father was claimed to be Johan Gotfried Kempt from Themar, Sachsen.

There are some notes after that, that appear to be about military service, but my Danish vocabulary is lacking... @Tanner Blair Tolman can you look at this?

Looking at both versions of Hans's birth record, I see the following:

Hans Nicolaysen Kempt, illegitimate son of Caroline Hansen in Jerpsted. As child's father was claimed to be Johann Gottfried Kempt from Themar in Sachsen, by whom she became, according to the foster mother's word, pregnant while she was in the service of the apothecary Zeltheim(?) in Tønder, whose service she according to the skudsmålsbog [credentials/character book] has been since 1 Nov 1854 to 1 Nov 1855.

According to ... writing from 22 April ? child added [to] Tønder ... ministerialbog (church book) ...

Also, Carl Johansen Jensen and Caroline Hansen were married in Hjerpsted on 12 July 1856 (linked). Caroline is listed as the 22-year-old [i.e., born in about 1834] legitimate daughter of Hans Hansen in [H]jerpsted and his wife Anna Maria Nielsdatter.
