Using Geneteka
I have made some progress on researching my Polish ancestors. I have birth year, town, parish, and province of my paternal great grandfather (in Poland). I have his wife’s name and maiden name. I have his parent’s names (from Poznan project website). But Geneteka and FamilySearch has zero info on my great grandfather or his wife or parents. The https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/en website does not seem to be working.
I’d like to find exact birth dates for my great grandfather and find out if he had any siblings.
Maybe it is a limitation of what is in Geneteka? For example, what does the parenthetical comments mean in the parish listing: ???
For example, what does “U 1720-1722” mean? I know his birth year was 1859. Does that need to be in the range of dates shown to expect any results? I also get no results when I select “all locations” for the parish. Same null results for marriage info (which I found in Poznan to be 1882).
Looking for suggestions.
Thanks, Mike M.

- Geneteka does not have comprehensive indexing, only a fraction of records were indexed so it is more often than not that the searches come empty handed. Even more so if you find a match you need to ascertain this is not someone with similar vitals
- since about a month ago you need to VPN to connect to Poland to use szukajwarchiwach
- “U 1720-1722” U might stand for "urodzony" e.g. born - possibly it is not the record you are looking for. Even if the last name is not common, within actual communities many people would share the first and last name over the years. This is why geneteka matches are just hints for further research.
