Under what circumstances would a man who is/was serving in military appear in mantal tax records?

I believe someone serving in the military (under new allotment system, 1770s-1850s period) was exempt from taxes...right? So does this mean they will not appear in the mantal tax records? What about when they are discharged or retire from the military, will they appear then?
