Teaching 12 year olds to trace Welsh Family--Help!
Hello all
I am a trained family historian, but not in Welsh genealogy. A friend of mine asked me to spend 2 hours teaching three middle school girls how to trace their roots to Wales. ( We live in the United States.) I tried to convince her to let me teach them about building a basic family tree, but they are going to Wales next year, and want Wales specific information.
A lot of my time is spent doing English research, so I thought maybe I could give them some basics. But after reading research guides and articles about Welsh genealogy, it seems like too much for me to learn in a week, let alone too much to teach them in 2 hours.
Am I missing something? Is there something interesting and helpful and fun I could do to get them started? Or should I insist on family history basics first?

Hi Becky,
Yes it is a lot for a week, and yes learning the basics would be a good way to start. If you want more help I would be more than happy to help where ever I can.
One of the first things they need to do is give you as much information about where and when their ancestors in Wales originated from. Names, dates and place are a vital start as you know. One big problem is patronymics and the name changes, but there are some wonderful people who love to help. I met up with two of your fellow country men just this week and was able to point them in the direction of a marvellous gentleman who loves Welsh family history.
Another thing is the history of Wales, the history, landscape, and culture of Wales are vital to understanding the lovely people of this, my adopted, country.
I'm just about to go away for the weekend but will be back late Sunday so will be at my keyboard on Monday.
Best regards
Cedar
