Questions: What is a "Marriage Ban" mentioned in marriage records archives?
This is an account of what happened to her according to her daughter:
Piotr’s daughter, Maria Bieda writes, “My father’s name was Piotr (Peter) and his brother’s name was Walenty (Walek). Both of them were working in America. My father came for a
visit when I was little but there was a terrible tragedy. In order to take my father to a railroad station, it was necessary to cross a river in a rowing boat. The boat sank on the way back and my mother and a couple of others drowned. We were left four orphan children . . . When my father learned about the tragedy, he returned to Poland and married the person who was taking care of us after my mother died (Stanislawa or Stella). Then father returned to America and my stepmother was bringing up the four of us. Father was sending money, but it was hard – Maria Bieda (pers. Comm. 04 March 1994) Catharina Garlak died 25 March 1913.

Death Record No. 16, Lubenia, of Catharina (Katarzyna) Bieda, born Garlak, who died on the 25th March, 1913, buried on the 28th March, 1913, she lived 31 years, she was wife of Petrus (Piotr) Bieda. She was born on the 8th June 1881, she married on the 3rd October, 1900. She died due to drowning in river Wislok.
You may read about Wislok river in Wikipedia, if you search in google.com. It is a large river about 220 km in length. It looks like there were 6 people who drowned at that time. What a tragedy.

Oh my goodness, I never knew which river on anything else about this tragedy. How can you tell about the details of 6 people drowning that day? Do you know what rail they might have gone to so Piotr Bieda could get to the port to travel to America?
Thank you! I genuinely appreciate it Maria, Kind wishes, and Blessings,
Mattie.

Mattie,
You may use pilot.pl = mapa.szukacz.pl to X the advertisements, then click on Ukryj next to Hotele on the right-hand side to eliminate all the H's - which are hotel advertisements, then enter Lubenia in the top box, "szukaj" is "search" to locate it (wyczysc is to clear) , then zoom in on little circles to get a closer view. about 16-17. You will see the river Wislok and across the river Babica community, with a railway station. You may select Lubenia (circle 13) (it will be in the middle of the red outline) and click on it, then move the mouse without pressing on it to Babica, you will then see in the right lower corner the distance of about 3 km.
You may also see earlier map of the area using kami.net.pl/kresy - and enter Lubenia, then click on the green icon next to it. You may then roll the wheel on your mouse to zoom in or out on the map to see the surrounding villages. l

Maria, What a great web site. The Wislok river looks like a major river. I can see the railway track also. I can see others now, within this record that also say "submersioa/a Wislok; these must be the others in that were in the boat with Catharina. The older maps (1934) are even better (kami.net.pl/kresy). This is very helpful in envisioning what happened and what that journey must have been like. Thank you, Mattie.
