I hope that the new alert/caution banner won’t be included in this feature, relegating this to another place even by the individual user would significantly reduce its effectiveness.

It's nice to see this capability of changing our personal settings return. Here are some additional thoughts:
- Why not look at how Ancestry presents their tree information? I quite like the way they place the parents above the person and the vital information/timeline to the side. This allows the user to see the vital information as it relates to the people in the family more easily. There is a simple thought here - users in the genealogical community are presented with multiple interfaces on the various sites they use. If more sites presented their data in a more similar fashion, it would make for a better user experience - they wouldn't feel the need to "learn" different sites. I think this is particularly an important thought for older persons. Those of us who are older generally find it more difficult to "learn" new websites, and many older persons do genealogical research. In this case, making the interface more familiar and easy to consume can be very beneficial.
- Could the user choose to place the parents above the person selected and place the Vital information to the left of the person (similar to Ancestry's approach)? I think the reason I like Ancestry's layout is because it requires very little scrolling to view the people, vital information/timeline and sources. To me, this is very beneficial. I personally don't feel any other site presents the person and family as clearly as Ancestry.com. The screenshot below shows the exact same screen size and the information in first view on FamilySearch and Ancestry, side-by-side. Notice how much information you can see in one screen on Ancestry vs. FamilySearch.

I love the my layout settings! Now I can use the new page without reverting back all the time! Thanks.

Unnecessary “data churn” is a big problem in Family Tree. The Life Sketch is one tool to help slow the churn. The Life Sketch can be used to provide information for other researchers to review before making changes. Moving the Life Sketch to the bottom of the page means the unnecessary changes will be made before other researchers even see it. If the Life Sketch contains inaccurate or nonsensical data, then Family Tree users can simply correct it, just as we correct all the other data in Family Tree. Putting the Life Sketch on the About page will not work. That page is designed to engage the youth and novice users. Serious researchers are never going to look at it.
