Finding Relatives Immigrating to America

Maybe you are like me and you have many ancestors who immigrated to America. Many of mine come from Sweden where Lutheran priests dutifully checked on each parish member each year --> like a yearly census with full names, maiden names, full birth, marriage, and death dates and places, move-in and move-out information, all in one record....truly a researcher's gold mine! And then, they immigrate to America where none of that information is easily available.

However, you often can find full birth dates in US Social Security records so you can tell which "John Johnson" is yours. A good way to search US Social Security records is by going to Ancestry.com/Search/Card Catalog/Keywords = "Social Security"/Search = 2 Social Security Index links come up, one with 133 million names and the other with 94 million names. Input your ancestor's info into these indexes and maybe you can find out which "John Johnson" is yours!
