I have not seen that name before and am not sure of the spelling. When I look up the word Mord it says murder. Is that what this is really saying as I see this word in all the death records I have seen so far.

Thanks for any help,

Paula Rail

    @PaulaRail1

    Hello Paula,

    The name is: Cyriacus. I found 4,000+ examples of this male forename on Ancestry. The name is also spelled: Zyriakus. And yes, it is a very unusual name. In my 20 years of German research, this is the first time I have seen this name.

    The word is not "Mord". It is the first syllable of a two-syllable word which continues on the next line. Do you see the colon after the first syllable? -- this indicates the word is hyphenated.

    I read the word as Merkmahle = Merkmale = characteristics; features; traits, attributes.

    P.S. In his signature he signs the forename as: Ciriacus.

    Thank you so much for clarifying. I am learning so much with all of your help. Obviously I am not a German speaker, but I am getting better at reading the writing and understanding the content of the record. When I get stumped I come here and you have all been so kind to help me in my weakness.

    Thank you,

    Paula Rail
