Need help searching for Japanese records

I'm looking for some help to find family records on my maternal side of the family. I have their names, DOB, and that my my maternal grandmother was born in Hokkaido and grandfather was from Niigata. They moved to Tokyo at some point but am not sure when. Their last name is Taira.

Have you spoken to any family members? Often time, family records are kept in the family and handed down from generation to generation.

Katie, I have been teaching Japanese family history classes at various Christian and Buddhist churches in Sacramento for the last several years and I have directly helped about 25 Japanese-Americans find their ancestors. I served a mission for the Church in Kobe, Japan about 30 years ago and have an undergraduate degree in Japanese, so I am able to read the koseki (family register) documents. Feel free to contact me directly at marty_wolf@stanfordalumni.org.
