County Kilkenny

My name is Bill Lawler. My great, great, great grandfather was Patrick Lawler, Sr. He was born in 1767 and lived in Kilkenny. Patrick Sr came to the United States in the late 1700s and his son Patrick Jr was born in 1793 in Maine, USA where multiple generations of Lawlers lived.
I'm coming to Ireland from March 8th to the 14th and would love to find out more about my ancestors from Ireland, and if any living relatives are still there. Who might you suggest for me to contact? It's our first trip to Ireland and we are excited to see some sites, but also very interested in our genealogy.
Thank you,
Bill Lawler

Sorry for the slow reply - was on vacation). One of the first things I would do is to google Kilkenny Genealogy (also search Facebook for the same). There's a few groups out there that should be a great help. Local knowledge would be an immense help to you. Theres a lot more out there than our County Page suggests- I'll assume that they are fairly recent or we would have listed them when we formed the page. (We'll need to look at that). Looking at your dates get conversing with them quickly. If you know a village or townland make sure and go to it. The dates are a bit early for Ireland but make sure & look. And I think that is the key - keep looking and searching.

Try the Ireland Catholic Parish Registers, 1740-1900. Also you might try the Kilkenny Archaeological Society in the town of Kilkenny.
