I am trying to gain a better understanding of Welsh naming practices. See details below for my quest
Welsh Naming Practices: I have a short history written by my g grandfather's brother, Evan Samuel Morgan. In this history he states that his maternal grandparents are William and Sarah Davies. He then states in the next sentence that this grandfather was commonly known as, William David Samuel. Was it a practice in Wales to change names i.e., from David, a middle name, to Davies, a last name? Also to drop the Samuel name? Why this intrigues me is because my great grandfather also carries the Samuel name like his younger brother as his middle name (William Samuel Morgan).

I had a Welsh family stay in my home when they came to the USA. Their surname was spelled DAVIS. However, they pronounced their surname with a both long sounding "A" and "E": Da veeees . They shared with me that member of their ward with the DAVIES surname pronounced their own surnames as Davis.
