A Gazetteer is a dictionary of place names basically, but there are various forms available that can provide interesting background to areas you are researching. It can help you determine the civil and religious jurisdictions of those places. Having looked up my home town on Vision of Britain, I was able to see the population back then, the fact that it had a railway station, and the factories that it was known for. In particular cotton mills and felt hat manufacturing. I loved this as that was my grandads trade before he joined the Navy for WW2. I also grew up surrounded my so many of these mills, many of which have long been demolished, but reading about what they were used for was so interesting! If you haven't done it before, take a look and see what you can discover about where your family lived 🙂
