23 Dec 1899, in the house at Via Federico Svevo #4, Rocca Imperiale, since Nunziata Celano has a serious cold that prevents her from coming to the town hall to marry, I, mayor of Rocca Imperiale with my secretary went to this house and found
Nicola Filippo Giannattasio, age 51, pharmacist, born in Rocca Imperiale, resident in Rocca Imperiale, son of Giovanni Giannattasio, resident in Rocca Imperiale during his life, and of Maria Francesca Pitrelli, resident in Rocca Imperiale during her life
and
Maria Nunziata Celano, age 49, housewife, born in Castelluccio Inferiore, resident in Rocca Imperiale, daughter of Pietro Paolo Celano, resident in Rocca Imperiale during his life, and of Rosa Dambra, resident in Rocca Imperiale during her life
who asked to be united in marriage .....
The newlyweds declared that from their relations were born 7 children of which the first 6 were registered as being born of unknown father, the 1st on 18 Nov 1876 named Filomena Celani, the 2nd on 30 Dec 1877 named Antonio Celani, the 3rd on 31 May 1880 named Maria Francesca Celani, the 4th on 4 Dec 1882 named Giuseppe Celani, the 5th on 8 Feb 1885 named Rosa Celani, and the 6th on 15 Dec 1889 named Maria Celani, and the 7th was registered as being born to both spouses on 26 Apr 1895 named Angela Giannattasio ... and with this marriage they legitimize them
NOTE: During this time period in Italy, church marriage was not recognized as legally valid, only civil marriage was. So couples had to marry both in church and civilly. Many people protested this by refusing to marry civilly, instead marrying only in church, and to punish this, civil officials would register their children as illegitimate or with unknown parent or parents. By marrying civilly later, as this couple did, these children could be legitimized retroactively.
