Indexing of the 1950 census is being done by the federal government
A very informative news article was written by the National Archives December 14, 2021.
In the article they explain that:
- The census is being is being digitized for release on April 1, 2022
- The images are being indexed by computer.
- Users will have a mechanism to make corrections.
I expect that RootsTech will provide more details in depth.

Hi Nancy. I had already signed up. I am looking forward to seeing a RootsTech presentation to answer my questions.
For example, did the Archives give up on their attempt to machine read the census? .. and therefore, punted to Ancestry to start on April 1.
Ancestry said they will have produced the machine read index "by summer." Will we have to wait for them to finish before we start reviewing?
Will the review be done on FamilySearch or on another website?
So far what I have seen is PR articles about the census being released. As a stake family history consultant and president of the local gen society, I don't feel I have enough information yet to know when to promote volunteer indexing efforts.

Hi, Alan. Good to re-connect after all these years. Wish I had answers for you about the census. We're all still waiting for details. Hopefully soon....

@Alan Rabe - like you I think the solution to "what is going on" will need to wait until RootsTech. Hopefully they will be able to give us some definitive guidance. It could be interesting if different people end up giving conflicting reports. Time will tell. RootsTech should be interesting. Our stake would like to do something but as of now there isn't enough info to really organize everyone.

The 1950 US Census will not be indexed in the traditional way, but volunteer efforts will help refine the automated indexing. See details in this FamilySearch blog post: https://www.familysearch.org/en/blog/indexing-1950-census
