Joined, uploaded tree but has not been uploaded as MY tree - what do I do now?

Hi All,

I may have made a rookie error. As the discussion title describes, I joined up, uploaded my tree but for some reason, it has not been uploaded as MY tree - what do I do now? I really don't fancy going through all the names again to populate my tree.

Where did I go wrong and how can I rectify this?

The answer to your question depends on exactly what you have done. I am guessing that you have uploaded a GEDCOM file. Normally GEDCOM files are not uploaded directly into Family Tree but into the Genealogies section where it retains its separate identity.

It is important to remember the nature of Family Tree. It is not a case of your tree and my tree, as is the case for many other websites, but a single tree albeit not every part is linked to the rest. So chances are high that many of your ancestors are already in the tree and users are discouraged from creating duplicates. The only part of your tree that remains solely yours is you and any living relatives.

@RichardPaton I am not sure this is going to help since you already did this, but I will share the information I have that I inquired for another guest this morning. I hope this will help you. This is the information given to me:

A gedcom file can be opened in RootsMagic software. It should bring every part into that program. RootsMagic is the only software that has been created to directly work with FamilySearch, which is way cool. You can download FamilySearch names directly into RootsMagic and vice versa. 

Here is the catch: It will bring everything into FamilySearch, but it then might create a TON of duplicates if it doesn't automatically check for names already in FamilySearch. I don't ever upload my RootsMagic to FamilySearch raw like that because I am a stickler for MAJOR checking and comparing and like to do it one person at a time. 

If that was me, I would open my Gedcom file into RootsMagic and create a new file. I would then have everything from that information in a newer workable format. I would then have FamilySearch open and RootsMagic open and do my comparisons side-by-side. The benefits: - FamilySearch will pull up more record sources that will add information to what you already have. - You will not end up creating a multiplicity of duplicates. - You can check the information and sources you have in your file (which is now in RootsMagic) and make sure the information you are adding to FamilySearch is, in fact, correct information.
