Translation of year 1896 marriage record from Chicago, Illinois
I would appreciate the translation of the marriage record from familysearch.com for Nasca/Mauro (the 4th entry on the right). I included the entire page for reference (the record citation is Illinois, Chicago, Catholic Church Records, 1833-1925 Assumption BVM Parish, Chicago: Illinois St, Marriages 1893-1916). I'm researching Dr. Andrew Mauro (circa 1840-1923) who immigrated from Italy to Chicago, Illinois around 1875 and I think this marriage record could be for his daughter.
Thank you for your help!
Debra
Question: Is the name Edna an Americanized version of the given name Edwidgem?
Question: I found a death record for Edna Nasco that I think could be the same person as the bride in the marriage record above. The parents names Andrew Mauro and Marie Valva are similar to the names of the parents in the marriage record and the spouse Frank Nasco has a similar name to the groom Franciscum Nasca. If Edna is the Americanized version of the given name Edwidgem, I think that the woman in the marriage and death record could be the same. What do you think? Here is the index for the death record from familysearch.com (there is no image):
Name: Edna Nasco
Sex: Female
Age: 62
Address: 111 Washington Boulevard
Burial Date: 15 Jan 1935
Death Date:12 Jan 1935
Death Place: Oak Park, Cook, Illinois, United States
Birth Date: 11 May 1872
Birthplace: Naples, , Italy
Marital Status: Widowed
Occupation: Housewife
Race: White
Father's Name: Andrew Mauro
Mother's Name: Marie Valva
Spouse's Name: Frank Nasco
Informant's Name: Florence
Cemetery: Calvary
Question: Does the marriage record state that the bride was born in Naples, Italy? The death record does state that Edna (Mauro) Nasco was born in Naples, Italy

The images you posted didn't work but I found the marriage record: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-DC6Q-N9N?i=75&wc=M66P-2WL%3A39538101%2C40016101&cc=1452409
It's in Latin, so all the names have been Latinized. I will give the Italian versions.
1 Oct 1896
Groom: Francesco Nasca of Marsico Vetere (province Basilicata, now actually Marsicovetere, Potenza), son of Giuseppe and of Rosa Lauletta
Bride: Edvige Mauro of Sala Consilina (province Napoli, now actually Sala Consilina, Salerno), daughter of Andrea and of Maria Valva(?)
Witnesses: Giovanni Nana and Gemma Mauro
Based on this record and the death record I found Edvige's birth record from 1872. It's recorded in Sala Consilina, where her father lived, as well as in Brienza in Potenza, where she was actually born. The record number in Brienza is 1872 #97 but is not available online. The record in Sala Consilina can be found here, starting at the bottom right and continuing to the next page. Edvige's father presented a copy of the record to be entered on 25 Jul 1872.
Here are the particulars, not a full translation:
On 13 Jul 1872 in Brienza, Andrea Mauro, son of deceased Giuseppe, age 30, veterinarian, passing through Brienza, presented a female born at the 20th hour on the 11th of the month to his wife Maria Valvo, daughter of Raffaele, age 19, at a house located on Largo San Cataldo, given the names Edvige Clotilde Narcise.

I have no idea about the doctor vs. veterinarian bit, all I can tell you is what the Italian record said.
He does have this entry in the Directory of Deceased American Physicians, 1804-1929:
Name: Andrew Mauro
Birth Date: 1841
Death Date: 8 Jul 1923
Death Place: Chicago, IL
Type Practice: Allopath
Practice Specialities: Chicago, IL, 1861
Licenses: IL, 1877
Practice Dates Places: Chicago, IL, 1861
Medical School: Facolta di Medicina e Chirurgia dell'Universita di Napoli, Napoli, 1861
JAMA Citation: 81:232
Cause of Death: surgery, complications, prostatectomy, acute dilatation, heart
I looked through the Brienza records the other day. All birth records from 1870, 1871, and 1872 are missing (the catalog entry does warn that various years are missing). But these are second copies, so the comune of Brienza should still have a copy.

The transcription of the birth record in Sala Consilina included the record number from the original Brienza record.
All Italian civil birth, marriage, and death had two copies made when created. One stayed with the comune, and the other was sent to the district court, then after a certain number of years, was transferred to the state archives. The FamilySearch images for Brienza are from that second copy that was sent to the court/state archives. It is likely that some records were lost due to poor storage conditions.
To request a copy of the comune's original you would contact the comune of Brienza, probably using this form:

I'm sorry that the image didn't work but glad you found it. I assumed the marriage record was in Italian. Thank you so much for the translations and finding the two birth records for Edvige Mauro! Now I know the family lived in Sala Consilina, Italy and can look for their records.
It is very helpful that you gave the Italian versions of the given names because I found a Cook County, Illinois marriage record for Francesco Nasca and Edvige Mauro on FamilySearch. The bride and groom's name's are the same as in the church record and the brides birth year is 1872 which matches the two birth records from Italy. So I think this marriage record is for the same persons. Also in the church marriage record the witness Gemma Mauro is found in the 1900 US census living in the same household as Edna Nasca so that is more information that links these family members.
Question: in the marriage record below, the date is 19 Sep 1896 which is not the same as the date of 1 Oct 1896 in the church record. Is it possible that a civil marriage was required before the church marriage?
Here's the index for the marriage record for reference (there is no image):
Name: Francesco Nasca
Event Place: Cook, Illinois, United States
Residence Place: Cook, Illinois, United States
Age: 26
Birth Year (Estimated): 1870
Birth Date: 1870
Spouse's Name: Edvige Mauro
Spouse's Age: 24
Spouse's Birth Year (Estimated): 1872
Spouse's Birth Date: 1872
License Type: Marriage
Event Date: 19 Sep 1896
Event Place: Chicago, Cook, Illinois
Spouse's Age: 24
Additional Relatives: X
Record Number: 32
Question: Andrew Mauro was a physician in Chicago according to the US census. The birth record from Brienza states that he is a veterinarian. Could he be a physician later in the United States?
Another question: about the record number in Brienza is 1872 #97 but is not available online. I looked in the FamilySearch catalog and found Registri dello stato civile di Brienza (Potenza), 1809-1910. The page included Nati 1866-1904 film #7198924. Could the 1872 Brienza birth record be there? It has 3000 images.
Thank you,
Debra Palmer

Thank you for finding the directory for deceased physicians. At least the records for Andrew Mauro agree that he was a doctor of some kind!
That helps me to know that the birth records on FamilySearch for Brienza are missing for 1870, 1871 and 1872 so that I don't spend time looking further now.
I know very little about researching Italian records other than the few records I've found on FamilySearch and Ancestry.com. Please explain what this means, "The record number in Brienza is 1872 #97 but is not available online" and your comment, "But these are second copies, so the comune of Brienza should still have a copy". Did you find the record number on a website for the city of Brienza? Do I need to contact the city of Brienza government office where the records are stored and request a search for the birth record for Edvige Mauro?
Thank you very much for your help!

Your answers about where the original record number was located and where the records are stored in Italy is very helpful. As well as the link for the form to request a record. I will try Google Translate to read the form.
Thank you very much for your help.
