Is the character an abbreviated name or title?
The image is of a 1781 baptism record in Walkendorf, Mecklenburg-Schwerin (no link available). The father of the illegitimate child is identified as "der Schreiber [?] Günther" at the very end of the entry. I am trying to decipher the character before his surname, and am leaning towards it being an abbreviation for a "title" or form of address, but am not sure if the occupation was usually associated with a formal or honorable address.
Another entry identifying him as the "Schreiber auf dem Walkendorfer Höfe" [?] C. Günther. This looks more like an initial, but not sure which. (maybe "E", but it is different from the "E" in "Ehefrau" earlier in the record.)

It could be an "H" for Herr. In former times only people with a certain standing were dubbed Herr.
