Hi. I live in America.. I am having trouble locating my ancestors. I know they were in the Hannover area but do not know the specific part of Hannover. the names i am looking for are Sophia Wilhelmine Brandes birth year i have is 1824 but could be 1823. i have her parents as Ernst Heinrich Conrad Brandes (id number KDMK-QFX) born approximately 1796, and her mom as Engel Sophia (maiden name unknown) born approximately 1799. I have looked at archion.de with no luck so far.. can you help please.. in Engel Sophia's will she mentions daughters Dorothea Sophia Charlotte and Dorothea Wilhelmina Caroline.. I know the family left Germany prior to 1849 as that is when Sophia Wilhelmine was married in the USA. her father was naturalized in the USA in approximately 1850/52. i also do not have their passenger records.. i see that there is a genealogy for Ernst on family search but i have not been able to verify the information it contains, including the marriage date given of 1829

Please can anyone help? even if its just to give an idea of a parish name to check on archion.de , i've looked at the meyer's gazetteer and the closest parishes to winzlar that i've been able to find on archion don't seem to be the correct location

Tinnany, Here are some thoughts and documents for you:
- I have used archion and found the Pdf downloads very poor quality. So I used screen shots which came out clearer.
- Ancestry and FS have better quality images and are easier to search. I do realize some documents can only be found on archion but in your case that is not true
- In small German villages there is only one church so all records for that village come from one church and are usually easy to find if they are find-able.
- In large cities like Hanover you need the name of the church because each church's records are sets of records you need to search through.

All from Ancestry. Post the last document on the Community and some kind person will translate it for you. Enjoy.

Using the film number in the second screen shot you can also find this document on FS. If this is the wrong Sophia use the information posted above to search.

Hello Tiffany,
without knowing the correct parish it will not be easy to find the birth record. The location "Hannover" probably means just the province, the former kingdom of Hanover which is a large area with many towns, villages and parishes.
The only clue you offer is the location named Winzlar. The church for Winzlar was in Rehburg. The Rehburg church books are available on Archion, see below. You should go through the volume marked as "T Tr 1779-1844" to see if there are any Brandes family members noted (T means Taufe=baptism, Tr means Trauung=marriage).
FT does not allow me to post the screen shot. Here is the link to the church books of Rehburg: https://www.archion.de/en/search/?tx_sparchiondocuments_spsearch%5Baction%5D=list&tx_sparchiondocuments_spsearch%5Bcontroller%5D=Search&cHash=319ecd318aafaf37fcee3de55d0ef37d#searchResult

Hello Tiffany,
on Ancestry I found death notices of the following persons who were born in Winzlar:
- Heinrich Wilhelm Brandes, born 24 Apr 1826 in Winzlar
- Marie Katherine Friederike born 18 Oct 1822, widow of Johann Heinrich Ludwig Brandes
While these are not the names you are looking for it shows that the family name Brandes existed in Winzlar at that time. If you can find the birth records for these men in the church book of Rehburg you could check if they have the same parents as Sophia Wilhelmine.

@Ulrich Neitzel i will check those out.. thank you

Tiffany, Ancestry has some info on a Sophia Wilhelmine Brandes but it may not be yours. But it does show a family is in this area with the name Brandes:
Neustäder Hof= und Stadtkirche Sankt Johannisk Hannover Preussen. I bow to the superior knowledge of Ulrich who is just downright amazing.

When this has happened to me I have combed the film by hand until I find what I want. It takes a while but over time you can see what is happening to the family over time. Depending on the search function will get you some hits but not all of them. I just work through the years. Fortunately I can read German names and dates but I depend on the likes of Ulrich Neitzel and Robert Seal to do my translating. You could have one of them translate the document above to see what you can learn.

Ok will do.. again thank you, depending on the handwriting i can usually make out at least some of the names but like you with other words i have needed major help lol.. my westerhausen line (which my Brandes married into) was found in Landringhausen and i immediately had about 150 records to sort through and translate and organize, luckily i was able to meet a very kind woman at the local family history center who helped me translate and organize :)

Over the last nine months I have had about 450 documents translated. Nobody touches the quality and precision of Robert Seal and Ulrich Neitzel. They are awesome. They have made my FH life wonderful.
All the work on my Scholl line is posted here for anyone to enjoy:
