a friend helped me get the link, hope it works.
this film has several instances in 1838-1840 of the symbol I am trying to understand:
looks like "99" with 2 lines through it. It is added to bpt records of some --not all--males.
The symbol is followed by a number like: 20/2, 26/4, 16/5...etc..then a year--this year is when the boy would have been between 17 and 20 yrs old.

So, I have not seen this symbol before, however, I did notice something, I checked the page before and didn't see what the 99 with what looks like the #(number) symbol with it, it does show up as you say, on the page that you provided, and it shows again on the next page.
It looks to me like this is a later entry, since it's accompanied with a year, the years next to the 99# seem to be at a much later date, than the original entry, 1854, 1856, 1859. The entry is also being added to where the parents are residing.
This is just a wild guess, but I think it has something to do with military conscription, I am taking your word for the fact that this is only for the boys, and since the age is around 17- to 20 it might correlate with required military service.

ok-thank you so much!
It definitely is only boys, and the symbol is used for the first few years of that film only from what I can see--one "scribe's" own style?
Have you seen military service noted in church records in other settings?
Thinking it may be military conscription, is there a next step I can pursue for records related to that?
