Whilst looking for some help to understand some old family connections, I came across this video on YouTube.

It gives some great guidance on words that we will see within documents to help us with our research. Picking out the family name section for example...

    Teulu - Family

    Rhieni - Parents

    Plant - Children

    Gwraig - Wife

    Gwr - Husband

    Priod - Spouse

    Mam - Mother

    Tad - Father

    Merch - Daughter

    Mab - Son

and for the last four, drop the first letter and then put "Llysf" at the start to make StepMother etc.

What I found particularly interesting, is that I now live in West Cumbria, which is where my Welsh ancestors ended up after being in Yorkshire. Here in West Cumbria people refer to their mother as Mam. whereas in central Cumbria it is Mum.

I think this could be down to a lot of the people in West Cumbria coming from Wales at the height of the mining industry.

Thank you for posting the video. It is very interesting and maybe not as daunting as I first though as languages and I have never been on good terms. I'm not too bad at pronouncing place names (some of them) and am very good at 'Llanfairpwll-gwyngyllgogerychwyrndrob.' Unfortunately that won't get me very far when it comes to genealogy.

I will need to view this a few times and will definitely look at more of his videos.

      Once again thanks.
