SEEKING MILITARY WWII RECORDS FOR MY GRANDAD ROWLAND JOHN ROBERTS. HE WAS BORN IN LADYSMITH, SOUTH AFRICA 24 DEC 1915. HER SERVED IN NORTH AFRICA AND WAS AN AMBULANCE DRIVER FOR A TIME. ONE OF THE MEDALS HE WAS AWARDED WAS THE GEORGE STAR IN 1941.

Did he enter military service while living in Ladysmith? Anyway, the town where he lived when he entered the service may have a local veterans organization similar to our VFW, Red Cross, etc. that would have records of those who entered military service from that town.

Thanks for coming back to me. Yes, he would have entered service from the Ladysmith/Durban area. A South African military website has provided me with additional info, so this is great. The UK sites did not have much as he was part of the South African allied force in North Africa. There was a home in Pietermaritzburg (east of Durban) where they looked after the families of WWII vets, discovered my great-grandmother spent her later years there, she lived to 90.
