Do Irish surnames have links to particular places?
I have the idea that I've heard somewhere that Irish surnames have association with particular areas of Ireland. Is that right? If so, does anyone know where the Flanagan name comes from?

Some Irish surnames are more commonly found in certain areas of the country, but there is no particular solid link of a surname to an area. All surnames are found nationwide, although you do see clusters of less common surnames in some locations.
Flanagan is one of the more frequently found Irish surnames, which is never a good thing from a genealogy perspective.

John Grenham's website has good surname maps( But there's a limit of 5 pageviews a day before having to pay fees). His map for Flanagan (https://www.johngrenham.com/findasurname.php?surname=Flanagan) shows it is common in most parts of Ireland.

Not sure if it helps your question but a guy by the name of Matheson wrote a really good book on irish surnames and their origins. Free to view on the url below😊

There is a further reference work that I had a copy of sitting in an obscure file on the Computer. It is entitled Irish Names & Surnames by Rev. P Woulfe. Again worth a look through. URL below.

And finally there is another work compiled by Matheson that is worth looking at, in fact I consider this the best of the three. Written in 1901.

@HayterDavidMark1 Thank you for linking to these two additional resources. Both very interesting and valuable.
