Help identifying church
Hello,
Could anyone help me identify which church these records belong to? I am trying to find out what faith my ancestor belonged to.
Thank you!
Mikela

I can't view the records because I'm not at a FHC or Affiliate Library.
What I can say is that the Church of Sweden (which adhered to Lutheran doctrines) once had a near-monopoly on religion in Sweden. Even in the early 1970s, 95% of the population were members. Leaving the church was prohibited until 1860, and until 1951 those leaving the church could only leave if they converted to another Christian denomination. Until 1996 all newborn children were automatically enrolled as members. So unless it's specifically stated the records were from another religion, you should assume they were Church of Sweden records.

Hi @mikela.mcconkie ,
The link takes you to the Asarum parish ministerial book volume C:I for all the births and christenings in Asarum parish between 1861-1872. Along with the great explanation by A van Helsdingen, I'd mention that the Swedish Church is an Evangelical Lutheran Church. It was the state religion for Sweden from 1536 until the separation from the government in January of 2000. The church law of 1686 stated that each parish was legally responsible to keep a record of all births, marriages, deaths, moving -in and -out, and a record of the parishioners Christian knowledge for the people who live in the parish. The parish was responsible to maintain the birth, marriage, and death records until 1991 when the responsibility was turned over to tax authorities.
