I have researched them and decided they not related to me. However, with several of them all pointing to the same ancestor, I now wonder if I somehow am related. In other areas my 5th and 6th cousin matches are correct.

Thru lines will give you people that may have the same ancestors in their tree

You should follow the paper trail to see who is actually DNA related

They could be descended further back

they could be in one of your ancestors siblings line

Check your DNA matches to see if they are in your connections

    verify with documents

    1. Descendency research may be very helpful.
    2. Some of my ThruLines connections are from "other" wives. The young death of a wife leaving young children to be raised most usually results in a non-DNA wife yet her children will have the DNA connection. I've got quite a few half cousins on ThruLines for this reason.
    3. Verification through sources.

If you have dna matches to these people they are related. The problem is knowing how they are related. Due to Thru lines using dna and family trees it does not always match up correctly. Trees are often wrong. You can use dna tools like triangulation and chromosome browsers to see which lines you actually do match on. My Heritage is a good place to go to find those tools.
