Currently the place that I shall call "Saint Mary Matfelon, Stepney" has a series of place-names starting with "Saint Mary Matfelon, Stepney, Middlesex, England" and finishing with "Saint Mary Matfelon, Stepney, Middlesex, England, United Kingdom" (1801-1966), "Saint Mary's Gardens, Stepney, London, England, United Kingdom" (1966-1998) and then "Altab Ali Park, Stepney, London, England, United Kingdom" (1998-now).

 

Basically the site of the church became a garden / park in 1966. The park / garden and the church just happen to be on the same site.

 

The problem is that because all the place-names are packed under the same place, "Altab Ali Park, Stepney, London, England, United Kingdom" is getting chosen as the automatically standardised place-name for St. Mary Whitechapel (the usual name for St Mary Matfelon). This looks seriously stupid when people are apparently baptised there in 1700-something and I don't think anyone would be satisfied by it.

 

If Altab Ali Park and St Mary's Gardens become a place in their own right, then this will, I believe solve the issue. After all, no vital events take place in the park. Then the original place can be reserved exclusively for the church place-names.

 

NB - the alternate names will also need fixing, I think, to remove Altab Ali Park and St Mary's Gardens from the church place and to remove the church names from the park place.
