Now the learning curve starts for you, Sheila. You do not have to know the language or should I say languages because they can be written in a variety of languages. The FamilySearch Wiki will be of vast help for you: https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Slovakia_Genealogy. If you have questions, be sure to ask.

I found another child in the index. https://tinyurl.com/y74yy9w2 A varient of the name István is Stephan/Stephanus. The cross by his name means he died young and his death date is in the last column. In both records the family is living at (Kovacri?) House 78
Stephanus Szmrtka
mentioned in the record of Carolus Szmrtka
- Name:Stephanus Szmrtka
- Sex:Male
- Wife:Anna Bencsat
- Son:Carolus Szmrtka
Other information in the record of Carolus Szmrtka
from Slovakia Church and Synagogue Books, 1592-1935
Name:Carolus Szmrtka
Event Type:Baptism Event Date:25 Mar 1879
Event Place:Svätý Benedik, Nová Baňa, Slovakia
Gender:Male
Father's Name:Stephanus Szmrtka
Mother's Name:Anna Bencsat

So "house 78" would imply they were not farmers, is that right? Do they put anywhere on the census what their occupation was? this is wonderful news!!

Farmers had numbered houses too. The vast majority of people were peasant farmers--and that's the occupation listed for the father on Istvan's baptism record.

Betseylee, sorry but I have been out of touch recently. I do have his immigration record. I am still missing his marriage to:
Caroline Kokavec
1886–1937
BIRTH 23 OCT 1886 • Svaty Benedik, Nova Bana, Žarnovica, Banská Bystrica, Slovakia
DEATH 28 APR 1937 • Detroit, Wayne, Michigan
and any information on his parents
István Szmatka
1858–
BIRTH ABT 1858 • Kozarovce, or Svätý Benedik, Nová Baňa, Žarnovica, Banská Bystrica, Slovakia
DEATH UNKNOWN
Anna Bencsát
1854–
BIRTH 18 SEP 1854 • Svätý Benedik, Nová Baňa, Slovakia
DEATH UNKNOWN
I have gone through each of the available church files till my eyes crossed, slept and tried more the next day. I guess I have come to the "Great Wall!".
I have to tell you how wonderful you have been to help me at least get one generation in for my Brother In Law a very sweet man. His children all have children and while he wrote what he knew, he had no back up information. I have just gotten back and I am ready to help write his story from what we have found. Your help was invaluable!
Thank you again!
Sheila

Caroline Kokavec does not appear in the Roman Catholic records but you could search surrounding years: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GTMW-WDL?i=86&wc=9P3B-HZ3%3A107654301%2C141660101%2C141783301%2C141798301&cc=1554443. I think Caroline is an Americanized version of her name. Maybe it would be Katalin. Her given name could be completely different. Search for the surname Kokavek.

1857 Svätý Benedik https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9T99-5R3?i=38&wc=9PQM-T3X%3A107654301%2C141660101%2C141783301%2C141786701&cc=1554443- looked from 1857 to 1859. No success. The name could be Stephanus instead of Istvan. It is a form of Stephan. I have seen one Istvan as a given name.

Is this the other village that Istvan would be from? Kozárovce

I had heard that Latin was common. That makes sense. Nothing about this makes sense as the area names changed, peoples names written all different ways!

Do you think she would be married in her hometown or in her husbands? I would think her own...
0 -
I have seen Kozarovce, Garamkovasci as well (on his immigration) The name changes by the occupying surrounding countries had to have been so tough on them!

Father Joseph, Mother Veronica Panchuha is that right?
0 -
Oh I didn't scroll farther along then that. They would have been from the same town as the child most likely..
0 -
Marriages usually take place in the parish of the bride. I see the maiden name of Veronica as Pancsuha. The s is similar to the s in Bencsat in the line above. But I am not familiar with Slovakian surnames. Also, note that she has a cross in her entry which probably means she died young. House 71.

It is the same way in Czechia.

Is there a place to look for the equivalent of death certificates?
0 -
Wow your right, same year as her daughter Anna was born. Perilous times for women. Thank you! I will work on figuring out what she died of with the translation dictionary, this is Latin correct?
0 -
You are welcome. You might try translate.google.com. It is Latin. Feel free to ask more questions. Slovakian is not my specialty but it is similar to Czechia research.
