Using Family History to assist our Full time Missionaries
Hi all. Yesterday I received this email from two Sister Missionaries I have never met:
"This is Sister ... and Sister .... We are over Temple and Family History work in our mission. We want to be able to incorporate Family History more in our work, especially on social media. We would love to talk with you on how we would be able to do that within your stake. Is there a good time we could do that this upcoming week?"
I would appreciate any ideas any of you have to use social media and Family History to further the missionary efforts for the living.
Thanks!

The family history guide is a great place to start. Go to thefhguide.com
it has training modules, how to videos and lots more. For all levels. Certified by FamilySearch

I created a Facebook Group (not Page) for my center. Then invited my staff (who I could find on FB), plus everyone I knew within the applicable stake(s), to join that group. Then I inserted a link on that FB group, to my FHC's webpage. I would add an FB post whenever our schedule changes, or to publish any important changes. But during this pandemic shutdown, I've used FB to post short desktop training videos I've made using a great app I bought called Screencast-O-Matic. See https://www.facebook.com/groups/1863992580497053

Sorry, I missed your final point: missionary efforts for the living.

I think Jon caught on in his 2nd answer, but these Sister Missionaries are not looking to get trained on how to use Familysearch, they are looking for ideas on how to Find or introduce non-members to members (T&FHCs) of the The Church of Jesus Christ using social media to advertise Family History.

@robertleelathen1 robertleelathen1 I know I served as a missionary during a time when we didn't have quite as many online tools and resources. However, there was this wonderful program in the California Oakland Mission at the time of my service, called "The Gift of Family History". We actually had smaller, card-like forms someone could fill out with names of family/ancestors a couple of generations back and we missionaries would turn them in to the family history center. Then, a book would be compiled and we could take the final product to the investigator to review and share more about the plan of salvation, etc.
The book included:
- A brief letter to the recipient highlighting the contents of the book.
- A section reviewing "Why Family History"
- Includes a copy of The Family - A Proclamation to the World
- Introduces Elijah the Prophet
- Touches on the House of the Lord
- Covers the justice and fairness of the gospel of Jesus Christ and includes a copy of The Living Christ.
- Reviews the glorious return of Elijah
- A section of the T&FH consultant(s) findings and recommendations
- A pedigree chart
- Family Group records
- Additional research like a time capsule or on this day in history... special dates of themselves or ancestors
- A guide to continuing on the work.
I'm sure it wouldn't bee too difficult to try something similar from an online approach.
If you would like, I can send you some of the text that accompanied such books. I re-created them for my siblings some years ago for Christmas.

Robert, I think I heard about this program from a returned missionary in my former ward. I would appreciate copies of the parts you would like to share. I think that not only would they be good for missionaries but also helpful to Ward Temple & Family History Leaders to see as a tool for them. candykamslc@gmail.com

I believe two others above would like one as well. (This community thread can be a bit confusing, or it is at times to me, so I thought I'd mention this.)

Encouraging members within the Stakes in the mission to share memories of their ancestors on their social media accounts. Also to bear their testimony of how doing this work has blessed their own lives and brought them closer spiritually to the Lord. Of course the missionaries can do this also but you will get a much bigger impact by having the local members be involved in this too.
Perhaps the sisters could create a Challenge and tag the members in their Stakes they are connected to?
