childrens home-siblings
Whoa!!! If this is true then we have one of the best leads ever so far! Idk how true it is, or how it could be possible.... but wow! Wouldnt that be wonderful if Lois and Josephine were placed in the same neighborhood?!?!?!

Great find! I think we should see if we can find church records for local churches. Maybe we can find the girls listed. What about church newsletters? I have occasionally found a history of a congregation by contacting local churches. We could look for city directories to determine the names and addresses of local congregations and then try to determine what records might be available.

For those that are unfamiliar with this search, you are missing out on a good one!
Can we help Jim find his sister? Who has some ideas of how to get this going?

It states the POLICY of the Oklahoma Children’s Society is the place siblings in the same home ... when that is not possible, they place them in the same neighborhood. I checked the 1920 census for Josephine, found 2 “Louise’s” on the pages near her... the ages didn’t match perfectly but as we know, the ages on the census records aren’t always correct and can be off by a year or more

The OSU Library or maybe historical society I don’t remember which one, but they have some of the records, they’re answers to me keep saying they don’t have records for 1916, but she may be in the later records in correspondence.

BUT... and this is my concern... I found an article last night showing that they adopted out children to families in other states ... an article about a set of twins were adopted by a couple from Colorado... hopefully Lois was kept in Oklahoma

OSU, is that Oklahoma State University? (I read it as Oregon State University, because I had a family member graduate from there.)
Maybe someone could try looking for Oklahoma at ArchiveGrid.com and find out what other archives are available for Oklahoma that we might want to search in. It would be great to help Jim find his sister. I can't imagine learning this late in life that I had a missing biological sister. https://community.familysearch.org/s/question/0D53A00004aIQ2fSAG/oklahoma-childrens-home-society-early-1900s

Can you share the information on the two girls named Lois that we might want to learn more about? Were they members of the same family in the previous census? (If she was not a member of that family in the previous census, we would want to check her out further!)

I don’t have the info in front of me @CarolynWebber CarolynWebber @Carolyn Webber but I’ll post in a few... wouldn’t have been on prev census due to age anyway

I should have typed “Oklahoma State Archives, Oklahoma Dept of Libraries Division” not OSU but now that I think of it, I believe OSau has some records also.

fyi... Robert Lee Handy and Nellie Handy lived at r 719 E. 4th St., Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Oklahoma during 1916 and 1917 (Josephine was adopted in 1916). Robert is listed as a switchman working at the C. R. I. & P. Railyard

Maybe we should search for Lois Handy and other family surnames to see if she might have been taken in by a relative? Did Nellie have other children?

And they are listed as Louise (but we all know how folks misspelled things back then lol)

Yes they had other children ... I’ve tried Handy,Bingman,Sadberry, Lawson and Waggoner ...nothing promising so far
