Could someone please help me decipher the names in this 1779 Hinterzarten, Germany marriage record? It is Joannes (Johann) Wangler marrying Anna Heizmann. Johann's father is Mathie/Matthew. Anna's father is Joannes/Johann. I have some guesses about the mothers' names, but can anyone tell me definitively what they are?

    Hello @Deon Holley Bingham,

Yes, I am happy to assist.

I read the place as: Dörflein, which translates literally as "little village" so perhaps a place in or around Rotwasser or Bruderhalde. The only "Dörflein" I found in Meyers Gazetteer was located in Bavaria and this is likely too far away to be the place referred to in this record.

For future reference: It's always best to post each request as a new request to the community at large rather than attaching it to a request which has already been answered.

    Hello @Deon Holley Bingham,

The mothers of the bridal couple are not recorded in this record.

    Translation:

    First column: 12 April 1779.

Second column: Johann Wangler, unmarried young man and surviving son of Mathias from "Rothenwasser" [Rotwasser] and Anna Heizmann, maiden and daughter of Johann from Bruderhalde.

    Third column: "profatus"

Fourth column: Jacob Schalb, "profat:", Johann Steyer.

My comment: I am not familiar with the Latin word "profatus". The root word is "profatur" = to pronounce, to speak out, or to declare. So perhaps the word in the third column means the groom and bride declared their intent to marry each other. In the fourth column the word is abbreviated as "profat:" and perhaps this was the person (Jacob Schalb) to whom they declared their intent to marry. Johann Steyer may be a witness.

Here are the links from Meyers Gazetteer for the two place names mentioned in this record:

    Rotwasser: https://www.meyersgaz.org/place/20642013

    Bruderhalde: https://www.meyersgaz.org/place/10251054

@Robert Seal_1 Thank you so much for your expertise! I'm sad not to know the mother's names, but knowing the towns the fathers are from will be very helpful. Thanks again for your service to this community!

@Robert Seal_1 I have another translation request. Do you have time? If so, can you decipher the town where Matthew Wangler is from?
