Completeness of Placenames by date
My GG-GF ( M14N-4TJ ) has 3 "Conflict-free Data" messages. (Actually, as a call-to-action that's a bad label - surely it should be "3 Conflicting Data" messages? )
One message is
The date of death, 16 September 1900, is in conflict with the standardized place of Broughty Ferry, Forfarshire, Scotland, which changed its name after 1801.
The basic crux of the matter is that "Scotland" became "Scotland, United Kingdom" in 1801 and therefore I should have standardised on the "Scotland, United Kingdom" version of the name. Mea culpa.
However, we have been told many times that the Standard Place-names is nothing like complete and therefore we can't possibly have profile place-name drop-downs populated with date appropriate values. So why are we doing this check to see if we have date appropriate values? Ahem, surely either there's enough date-related names for this, or there isn't? 😉
The entry for Broughty Ferry illustrates the issues well - there's an entry for 1801-1828 and then the next is for 1928-1996. A gap of 100y. So the names don't provide for his death in 1900 anyway!!
I suspect the 1801-1828 entry should run from 1801 to 1928 but I need to check on when Forfarshire changed to Angus first, before requesting the change of the Standards team… Tomorrow…
