What is the name of the town?
I would sincerely appreciate some help with this. I can't seem to figure out what town Sarah Ann Henstock was residing in at the time of her emigration, and I can't find her in the 1901 census. It appears to be Aberbery. See line 25.
I know she was a member of the Blackburn LDS ward in September 1900.

Thank you!

The only "Aberbe" towns in the GENUKI gazetteer are Aberbeeg (with spelling variants) in Monmouthshire and Aberbechan in Montgomeryshire. (See https://www.genuki.org.uk/gazetteer?place=aberbe&county=-1&search_type=1&display_type=1 )
If if if, she is LBW8-JC7 then I am puzzled.
Have you got her in the 1891 census? I can't see her in the 1901 with the details of LBW8-JC7. I would cling to the fact that the profile for LBW8-JC7 raises an issue about her maiden name, i.e.
"… Lee was said to be her last name on her marriage record even though her father's last name differs and it is said to be her first marriage. But Henstock is said to be her last name on her Social Security benefit application. …"
I would suggest a couple of things -
- Who is Mrs Elizabeth Lee of Susquehanna who is a witness on her marriage certificate? I think you should try to trace her.
- Have you seen that on the marriage licence, nearly in the bottom right, it says "Adopted". Maybe Mrs Elizabeth Lee is her adoptive mother, accounting for the name change???
If she is adopted (when?) and there is a name change then it may take some time to unravel the possibilities. Especially if her parents' were unmarried leading to the adoption????
Best of luck…

Does Robert B Lee (LW28-4B6) have anything to do with this?
There is a chap of that name living at 14 Bayden or Boyden St, Susquehanna for the WW1 Registration. He was born 13 Oct 1886 in Staffordshire, England. He is in the 1920 at 14 Boyden St, married to Hazel with 3 children. That marriage (on Ancestry's New York, U.S., County Marriage Records, 1847-1849, 1907-1936 ) shows his parents as Robert Lee and Elizabeth Burgess.
The WW1 Registration contradicts the birth date on LW28-4B6 - I can't see where the exact date comes from.
Now, there are 2 things about Robert. Firstly his mother is Elizabeth Lee, which sounds like the Mrs Elizabeth Lee on LBW8-JC7's marriage. Maybe…
Secondly, there is no birth registration for a Robert Lee in Staffordshire in 1886 or 1887 - the legal requirement. There is a registration for a Robert Henstock Q4 of 1886 in West Bromwich Reg District (Staffordshire). The GRO site ( https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/login.asp ) shows Robert Henstock's Mother's maiden name to be Burgess:
Name: Mother's Maiden Surname:
HENSTOCK, ROBERT BURGESS
GRO Reference: 1886 D Quarter in WEST BROMWICH Volume 06B Page 812Then there's Sarah Ann:
Name: Mother's Maiden Surname:
HENSTOCK, SARAH ANN BURGESS
GRO Reference: 1888 D Quarter in WEST BROMWICH Volume 06B Page 801As well as…
Name: Mother's Maiden Surname:
HENSTOCK, ELIZABETH ANN BURGESS
GRO Reference: 1885 J Quarter in WEST BROMWICH Volume 06B Page 834It looks very possible that Robert and Sarah Ann are siblings - maybe their mother remarried, to Robert Lee, who adopted them to make it official.
There are Ancestry trees that claim that Robert B Lee is also Robert Henstock but give no indication about how it happened…
Very strange - I think you need to try and follow up all the names above in the hope that it will pull together.

Note in the GRO quotes above that "Burgess" is the mother's maiden name and is not part of the child's name. The Community editor didn't cope well with multiple spaces.

As with Adrian, I have been unable to identify the birthplace, which clearly appears to read ABERBERY. Equally as clear, however, is the given age of 18 years and 4 months in documents dated February 1904, which would indicate an October 1885 birth, rather than the October 1888 indicated elsewhere. However, she could have easily lied about her age if she was just 15 when she emigrated. As she was at Blackburn in 1900, the birth registered there in the March 1887 quarter does seem to be the closest match, but that Sarah Ann appears to have been born illegitimately.
If the birth name was definitely Henstock, there is a Hannah Henstock who married at Blackburn in 1900 - it would be interesting to see if she is the mother shown on the 1887 birth certificate. But my suggestions are possibly way off the mark, given Adrian's detailed comments. (Especially, relating to the West Bromwich records, given the Staffordshire birthplace shown elsewhere.)
