Want to add portrait by selecting photo from gallery
While in a Family Group, I add a brand new person and upload some photos to their memories page. No problem there. Next, I want to add one of those photos as the person's portrait. When I click the portrait icon, the "Add Portrait" window pops up, but the recently added photo is not shown as one of my options. Why?
The visibility for the photo is set to "Limited Access," and the limited access is set to the correct family group. Is this a bug?

Thank you, Mary.
That's honestly something we didn't consider.
"Private" memories can't be used as Portraits because any Portrait added to Deceased person can be viewed by everyone.
Living people can only be viewed by your group though, so it would make sense for us to allowed "Limited Access" memories to be used as Portraits.
I have added your feedback to our list of suggestions and improvements. I don't know a timeline for when this will be added, or if our design team will come up with a different solution, but I wanted to thank you for pointing this out.

A related issue (bug/not done yet): When a photo is set to Limited Access the mouseover in the gallery says Private.

Should this be on the known issues list? It is certainly a source of confusion for me at this stage.

There is no "limited access" anymore, so the mouseover tip is correct — the memory is indeed private, even if it has also been made visible to selected group(s).
And the original issue about adding a private memory, even one that has been shared with group(s) is a tricky one, since portraits on deceased persons are publicly visible. If it were allowed, then it would have to include warnings about the public visibility.

The inability to use private photos for portraits has tripped me up. Thankfully I noticed it was happening and I guessed it was because the photos were "private" even though I had not read anything about this until it happened to me so it was a "why isn't this working like I would expect, is something broken?" moment.
Even once I realized it I still forgot as I would plow through excitedly adding photos to my family tree group space. I had to train myself to remember and make the upload first directly into the portrait upload area, generate the portrait, and then change it to private later. That worked. If it is going to take months to make a better solution maybe a pop up that warns users about this and explains the work-around would be a good temporary solution.
I figured I could just delete a photo that I uploaded as a private photo and then upload it again directly into the portrait area if I forgot. However, yesterday as I tried to delete a photo I got the photo deleted confirmation, but the photo was still there even after a refresh and a couple attempts. It'd allow me to click delete, confirm the delete, but then the photo would still be there. I found a duplicate older photo and deleted that one with no problem. I wonder if there is a glitch with deleting private photos? This is a different issue, but it is related because it stops me from being able to just delete and upload again.

After my last post I noticed I could change a photo from private back to public and either delete the photo or use it to make a profile image. If I did the latter I could switch it back to private after. This wasn’t working for me a couple days ago, but now it is. I even remember I did try switching it to public to see if I could make it a profile photo then and at that time it still wouldn’t show as an option to add as a profile photo even after I changed it to public. Yesterday however this worked.

In my last comments I said sometimes I can change a photo from private to public and then choose it from the options for a profile photo. However, with more trial and error it seems this might only work while the photo is still in processing. I am not sure frankly. It just seemed to work sometimes and not others and I thought maybe it was depending on how fast I switched it back t public.
I've determined that when I accidentally upload a photo directly to the memories page and it gets marked private, the most reliable work around is to change it back to public, then to click the profile picture area on the person page and select the third tab over in the pop-up which is to select a photo from my photo gallery. In doing that, I can consistently select a photo that was originally marked private and changed to public later.
The reason for my third comment is because I am learning how this works the hard way, and wanted to help anyone else who reads this.

@Michael W. McCormick Thank you for sharing this workaround. These two issues have been a problem since we first found them. Rest assured the product team is working fervently on a way to fix this!
