Cheryl, Nowy Targ is a town now with over 33.000 residents. It is also possible that Wojciech Mardula was from one of small communities near Nowy Targ. We do not have any records from Nowy Targ in Family Search Library. Geneteka Indexing shows birth records for Nowy Targ missing from 1817 to 1890 years. The same records are missing in Polish State Archives: szukajwarchiwach accessible on line. Christmas and New Year celebration are big holidays in Poland. After the New Year I will contact my friend in Krakow, Poland and some archives to find out more.

Anna, as I mentioned before Nowy Targ has more than 33,000 residents. A lot of records were destroyed during the wars. In 1998 there were about 150 persons with surname Marduła (L with a slash) and only 2 with surname Mardula (without a slash) in Nowy Sącz District. see herby.com.pl/indexslo.html - I attach the scan.
I was able to check the extent of records from Nowy Targ in Krakow Diocese Archives at Franciszkanska Street. They do not do research per requests. I attach the scan of the list of Nowy Targ records that they have. Unfortunately, Nowy Targ records for year 1861 are missing. Even at those earlier years, like 1881 for birth record of Joseph Marduła, the research could involve looking through a very large number of records, probably from various districts of town. Right now in Krakow the tempratures are about 9 degrees F. I have a friend in Krakow, who could go to those archives, but I do not want her to freeze waiting for buses to get there. And it may be expensive for you.
You may try the following: google.com - ~genealogy Nowy Targ Marduła or you may try simply enter: Nowy Targ Marduła - you may use right click to get English translations. Make sure you use L with a slash.
You may also try Facebook where they have Polish Genealogical Society and you may check if there are any members with Marduła connections to Nowy Targ. I wish I could help you more.
