Hello Gail,
Translation:
41. Peter, legitimately-conceived little son of Johann Christoph Schmidt, postal worker and day laborer here, with Anna Barbara, née Meÿerin, was born on the 3rd of May at 11:30 pm, and was immediately baptized by the midwife because of weakness [on the part of the newborn child]. Witness: Peter Schuster, journeyman stocking weaver and inhabitant here.
Comments: If a newborn child appeared to be weak and sickly, the midwife would often perform an emergency baptism so that the child would not die unbaptized. This is what took place here.
"Journeyman" is a guild term which indicates that the person had completed his apprenticeship and was able to earn wages in the chosen profession by working for a master in that trade. The three guild classes are: apprentice; journeyman; master.
