In Austria there was no compulsory military service in the years 1930-1938. After the Anschluss 1938 Austrian military was integrated into the German Wehrmacht. The main source for military documents from the Wehrmacht is the Bundesarchiv: https://www.bundesarchiv.de/EN/Content/Artikel/Artikel-ausserhalb-der-Navigation/Hinweise-milit-Unterlagen-persbez/benutzen-hinweise-militaerische-unterlagen-persbezogen-en.html.
Depending on the military rank documents will be found either in the Department Military Archives in Freiburg (Officers and civil servants) or in the Department Information on Personal Data related to World Wars I and II in Berlin (enlisted ranks). Most documents are not available online and require a visit to the archive or a research assigment.
The most important tool for information on soldiers missed in action is the "Zentrale Personenkartei der Wehrmachtauskunftstelle (WASt)" (https://www.bundesarchiv.de/DE/Content/Artikel/Ueber-uns/Aus-unserer-Arbeit/z-kartei-pa.html).

If you have access to Ancestry here is the link to a database entitled "Germany, Military Killed in Action, 1939-1948": https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/61641/
There are six entries for soldiers named "Karl Janda" in this database.
If you don't have personal access to Ancestry you can access Ancestry and this specific database at a local Family History Center.

Thank you for your reply. I do have full access to Ancestry and will review all the entries.
I will also submit a request for military records to the Bundesarchiv. You all have been very helpful!
