How do I know if my ancestor came from the city of Hanover or the Kingdom?
My ancestor, Herman Schmidt, states he was born in Hanover in three records: 1860 and 1870 New Albany, Floyd, Indiana Federal Census and his 1858 naturalization record where he forswears allegiance to the "King of Hanover." Can you hlep me to solve this?

If his naturalization record has him forswearing allegiance to the King of Hanover then he immigrated from the Kingdom of Hanover. He may or may not be from the city of Hanover in the Kingdom of Hanover. Try to find the german record of his boarding the ship to emmigrate. These sometimes will give the village/city that the emigrant is from.
Is there a familysearch ID # for Herman Schmidt?

Thank you, Greg. I just added Herman: G6X5-77P. He left from Bremen in 1854 and arrived in New Orleans. I searched Bremen departures but couldn't locate his name.
